Installation Instructions

Macabacus Lite is easy to install.  Just follow the instructions below.

If you are a corporate user, you can typically install Macabacus Lite even without support from your IT department.

1. Download add-in

Choose to save the MacabacusLite.xla(m) file when downloading. Do NOT open the file.

2. Move downloaded file

Move the downloaded file (but do not open it) from the download folder to the folder suggested below or any other folder where you save add-in files. You can drag-and-drop or cut-and-paste the file to move it.

  • Windows XP - Move the downloaded file to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns, or equivalent on your PC. The "Application Data" folder may be hidden, but type in its name and it will appear.
  • Windows Vista/7 - There are two options for installing Macabacus Macros:
    1. Most users should move the downloaded file to C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns. The "AppData" folder may be hidden, but type in its name and it will appear.
    2. If you are logged into your computer under a built-in administrator account and want to allow all users of your computer access to the add-in, you can move the downloaded file to Excel's® Trusted Location for add-ins. To determine the path to the Trusted Location for add-ins, open Excel's® Trust Center. Note that this administrator account is NOT the "Administrator" account that you might set up when running Windows for the first time. Rather, this hidden-until-enabled account is set up using the command prompt. Instructions for settings up this account can be found here. Microsoft does not generally recommend enabling this account for security reasons.

3. Install add-in

Open Excel® and open the Add-In Manager (Tools > Add-Ins in Excel® 2003 or Alt > t > i). If Macabacus Lite is not already included in the list of available add-ins, click the Browse button to find the add-in file you downloaded. If Macabacus Lite was previously installed, Excel® may prompt you to replace the add-in file. Click the Yes button. Finally, check the box next to "Macabacus Macros" or "Macabacus Lite" in the list and click the OK button.

4. Customize Macabacus Lite

Now that you have installed Macabacus Macros, you'll probably want to customize it to work with your firm's color palette, number formats, etc. To do so, just open the Settings dialog from the Macabacus tab/menu. Note that you can also customize shortcut keystrokes from the Hotkey Manager. Enjoy!
